“Fly So High” by Yamada Yui is the ED theme for Blue Dragon. An anime that I wish I could say that I liked, simply because the character designs were by 鳥山 明 (Toriyama Akira). I’ve been a fan of Toriyama since I was really young, when Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball was airing on TV. Unfortunately, Blue Dragon was a bit of a disappointment. Luckily for me, his character designs for the Dragon Quest series still shines, although it can be criticized that the designs are a bit predictable.
While I didn’t think “Fly So High” worked too well as the ED for Blue Dragon, it is still a pretty good song. At the same time, nothing really stands out in the song, but the song is nicely balanced with a good pace and energy, easy melody that is not too cookie-cutter, and singing that’s really not bad. Perhaps the song really is unremarkable, and there is not much that is special about it, but it really doesn’t have much pitfalls either. The only one thing that I thought could improve was Yamada Yui’s singing. Her voice is again, not very special, and it might lack a bit of depth and emotion, but it works quite well in this case.
I guess the word to describe is that it is… well, rather plain. Yet, it is one of its merits. I don’t feel that the song would draw the listener in, but at the same time, it could hardly hurt anyone’s ears. I found that it’s a great song to be playing in the background, giving a bit of its energy to the listener.
