“Kaidoku Funou” is Jinn’s third single, and also the second OP theme for「コードギアス 反逆のルルーシュ」(Code Geass Hangyaku no Lelouch). While many fans of Code Geass have expressed their dislike of this song, this single boosted Jinn in the top ten in the Oricon Charts for the first time.
Compared to “COLORS” by FLOW or even to their earlier single “Raion”, it lack the pace and power that allowed those songs to fit the OP so well. However, “Kaidoku Funou” still exhibited the abundant energy that is really the best part of Jinn. Like “Raion”, the energy of this song really felt as if they didn’t hold back while performing the song, and frankly, it is every bit as addicting and infectious once you get used to the slight off-key singing and simplistic lyrics.
Speaking of the lyrics, I thought that they kinda fit, and it was a bit about Lelouch was seeking his “dreams” and how it is faraway and unattainable. Of course, my Japanese is not the best in the world and I could be very wrong, but I though some of the lyrics really fitted that image. The energy, melody, and the guitar in this song is good enough to compensate many of the downsides of Jinn.
The b-side track, “Someday”, is a much slower ballad with a melancholy tone. However, the melody is very soothing and the singing is much more even in this song. The song is not particularly brilliant or outstanding, but its easy melody and music more than makes up for it. It also is one of the best sung songs of Jinn.
In all, I don’t think the sole reason why “Kaidoku Funou” reached Oricon top ten was because it was the OP theme for Code Geass (though a large part is probably due to it), but it is so far the best single of Jinn. If you liked “Raion”, you will definitely like this single.
